RIP TO STEVE YANO OF THE ROADIUM SWAP MEET + SKANLESS RECORDS

Posted on

I just recently heard some news via Violet Brown of The Wherehouse Record Stores fame & Tech N9ne‘s Strange Music of the passing of a West Coast Hip Hop Pioneer. Rest In Peace to the one & only Steve Yano of Roadium Swap Meet/Skanless Records fame….He passed away earlier on Wednesday (9/17/14) due to a freak accident. This man was responsible for selling the hottest records in LA & the classic Dr Dre, Dj Tony A, Eazy E, NWA cassette mixtapes, as well as putting out Hi-C, Proper Dos & Black Forest records on his own label, Skanless. He was also the first person to sell the Ultimate Breaks and Beats album series (these Breakbeat compilations is basically the Holy Bible of Breaks….Dre used all of them on “Straight Outta Compton”) in LA. All of this was happening at his booth at the Roadium Swap Meet in Gardena, Ca in the 80’s. I had the pleasure of working with him thru Wiz1der (of Circle Of Power) & the whole Blak Forest crew. I recorded “From The Ground Up” & “Ubiquity” for the “World Famous Beat Junkies Vol. 2” album at his Skanless Recording Studios in Alhambra in 1997, as well as the Visionaries, getting our 1st album “Galleries” mixed there. He was such a cool guy & is definitely a Pioneer in the West Coast Hip Hop scene. My deepest condolence to his family. Thank you Steve for all your contribution.

You can read an old LA Times article about the history of NWA that featured Steve Yano in it:
